Chapter 33
I could hear the sound of heavy footsteps, running, rushing along the narrow, concrete pathway that led to my front door. “Is that you Able?” A voice hurriedly asked, yelled.
I glanced up from the floor. My vision blurred, I noticed my front door. It was open. But I didn't remember opening it. I turned my head, looked up.
“Able, I got here as fast as I could. I saw you. From my car. From the street. You fell, hard to the floor. Did you pass out again?” As I regained my vision, I saw a pair of large round eyes, gazing through thick lenses. Those eyes settled on mine. It was another neighbor. He stood above me, looked down. He was a man old enough to be my father. This time it was Chad Norton. “Are you okay?” he asked, tried to catch his breath.
Chad was a preacher at a small church in our neighborhood. A short, hefty man, he wore thick eyeglasses that worked like a magnifying glass. They made his tiny round eyes appear large. Very large. Two or maybe even three times their actual size. From the first day I met him, he claimed he couldn't see anything without his glasses. I always welcomed a visit from Chad. There was something extra special about him that I wanted to rub off on me. This time I was especially glad to see him. He'd appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Like he always did.
Chad reminded me of something I'd heard a black preacher say when I'd visited an African American church. My assistant, Bridgette, convinced me to attend an early Sunday morning service with her. “Don't forget your Bible,” Bridgette said. She'd reminded me over and over again the entire week. “Don't forget your Bible.” The first thing she asked when she saw me at the church was, “You got your Bible?” I had it tucked neatly under my arm. She smiled when she saw it. A few minutes into the service, I understood why Bridgette had asked me to bring it along. I needed it because Pastor Williams kept referring us to scriptures, “Underline this passage. Now turn and highlight this scripture.” My bible had a few marks in it when I left church. After attending church that day, later I found myself sitting in my office reading scriptures that I'd highlighted. And reading the Bible more and more. That was something new to me.
Church members had grown excited midway through Pastor Williams' sermon. The service had been lively already, but about halfway through the sermon, Pastor Williams was on fire. His congregation came to life as he preached about having hope in a hopeless world.
Using my New Living Translation Bible, I followed, highlighted, as Bridgette's pastor, Dr. Isaac Williams, quoted scripture from Proverbs 24:14 “In the same way, wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short.” He also read another passage from Jeremiah 29:11.
